Dr. Kholiwe Mkandawire

Dr. Kholiwe Mkandawire is a prominent Malawian veterinary surgeon, pharmacist, academic and political figure, highly regarded for multi-disciplinary expertise bridging animal and human health alongside an active role in Malawi's public policy and political landscape.

She holds a rare combination of professional qualifications, practising as both a veterinary surgeon and a pharmacist. Over a career spanning more than two decades, she has worked with government ministries in Malawi and Botswana, and managed private enterprises such as Mudi Pharmacy Ltd. and Mudi Vet Clinic.

She serves as Head of Clinical Studies at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), engaging in collaborative research with institutions such as the Blantyre Research Facility.

As a key member of the Malawi Veterinary Association, she is an outspoken advocate for rabies eradication, collaborating with global networks such as Mission Rabies to coordinate mass dog vaccination campaigns across Malawian cities.

Within the United Democratic Front (UDF), Dr. Mkandawire has long been an influential strategist, serving as chairperson of the party's policy sub-committee and playing a central role in drafting and launching party manifestos. Her public footprint extends back to the early 2000s, when she acted as a spokesperson for opposition coalitions, advocating for democratic freedoms and civil rights during highly contested electoral periods.

Beyond politics and medicine, she champions grassroots environmental initiatives, spearheading the Malawi Flora project alongside MP Gertrude Mkandawire to combat local soil erosion and enhance food security through the promotion of fruit tree cultivation.
